Who are Bike Buddies?

Bike Buddies is a completely volunteer-run shindig. Bike Buddies are people who love riding bikes. They might also own a car or have a bus pass. They might be techies or fashionistas or something else. Bike Buddies ride slow or fast, wear skirts or lycra, bike arterials or ride the trails. They have figured out bike commuting and want to help others who live near them bike commute as well; They’ll share route tips and bike alongside new riders to help them get started.

Commuting 101

Here are a few tips to get you rolling:

  • Step 1: Find a bike that’s right for you
    • It’s important to find a bike that you feel comfortable on.
  • Step 2: Plan your route & test it out
    • Once you decide on a route, grab a friend or a Bike Buddy to join you on your test ride. (Bike Buddies can also help you choose a route)
    • Not comfortable biking your full commute? That’s ok. Try using a bus or drive to a park-n-ride and then hop on your bike; Your commute is your commute.
  • Step 3: Know where to park your bike
    • Will you be using a bike rack on the street or, maybe, your work allows you to bring it inside?
  • Step 4: Attire-ize
    • Think of what you want to bike in that will keep you warm and comfortable, it doesn’t have to be spandex or lycra. Plan for the weather and what you’ll be doing when you get to your destination.
  • Step 5: Register your bicycle
    • Losing your bike stinks. Register your bike with the Bike Index. If your bike is stolen, this will make it easier to get it back.
    • Liability – Squeaky Wheels’ involvement is to connect riders with bike buddies via email or social media, it is up to individuals as to how they will connect and support the interested rider. Individuals have ‘opted in’ to these communications by providing their contact information and agreeing to be contacted if a match is made.
