Bicycle Lighting

We are past the dark days of Winter and moving toward Springtime. Even though the days are getting longer hours of light, it is still important to use your bike lights.
ImageThe red lights on the rear of the bike help alert vehicle drivers coming up behind you, even in daylight. It is even better to have them flashing to help catch the drivers eye. Using flashing lights in the daytime increase the chance for the drivers to see you far in advance of passing you on the road.

Make sure the lights are clearly visible just below your seat, on the outside of your backpack or on your helmet. Having multiple lights helps also for better visibility. Remember to use as much lighting as possible during the day or night for the best visibility.

I have come across a few bikers in the dark, only to notice them in enough time to avoid hitting them. It appears they may not have been aware their lights were out or not turned on. One biker did not have any rear lighting. I wonder how concerned they are for their own safety. Image

Daytime front lights are also important. Should you get into an accident, it reduces the chance of a driver claiming that somehow they could not see you and placing the blame for their not paying attention on you.

Bicycling injuries can be life changing as the bike rider has the greatest risk when riding versus a car. It is best to make sure drivers can see you at all times.
