   Who should join squeaky wheels?

  • Everyone who uses a bike for errands, commuting, or recreation.
  • Everyone who owns a bike and hopes to ride it one day.
  • Everyone who has children who ride, or would ride if the roads were safer.
  • Everyone.

   Why join?
squeaky wheels supports Bainbridge cycling. We work to make the island a safer place for every adult and child. We do this through education, spreading and gathering information, and hands-on efforts like bicycle safety classes, rides and events. We need to know who rides bikes on Bainbridge Island, how often they ride, what roads they use and what their needs are as cyclists. This information is used to advocate for wide and clean shoulders, bike lanes and bike paths. Bainbridge Island is an ideal community to be bike-centered. Members benefit by receiving updates on B.I. cycling progress, going to social events, having safer conditions, meeting other cyclists, and knowing that they can make a difference in the world. . .

   How do I join. . .
squeaky wheels is an official 501(c)3 organization and your membership is fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Membership forms are usually available at the BI Public library, both the local bike shops or click here for a printable membership form! Mail in your form, or turn it in at BI Cycle or Classic Cycles.

We are always advocating for safer cycling, but you can too! The more voices heard by our city, schools and state, the better. We have found that INDIVIDUALS MAKE A HUGE IMPACT when they call, write or show up at meetings. Here is how to to get started...

Easiest takes 5-10 minutes: Call, write or e-mail with your concern. State the problem and any ideas that you have for a solution. Our contact page has many links to officials and governrment departments. People to contact: School Board and School Administration at district and individual school level, the City of Bainbridge Island-the Mayor, the Council, Public Works and Planning Departments, the Washington State Ferries and WSDOT for the highways.
Also easy, but takes an hour or so: Go to a meeting in person. The School Board and City Council have time at the beginning of each meeting for public comment. You just stand up and speak for a few minutes about your concerns. They may ask you a few questions and then you can go home. The City of Bainbridge Island also has committee meetings that the public can attend. Planning does long range planning while Public Works actually does the physical work. Check the city website for meeting times, they are usually at City Hall. The Police Department is in charge of speed limits, but they listen to what the council and Mayor suggest – you may need to speak to both of them.
Go to websites: City of Bainbridge Island, WS Ferries, WSDOT, BI School District, NHTSA
...
Or use the phone: Paula Reeve is the Bike/Ped coodinator for WSDOT (360) 705-7258. Julie Matlic is Community Partnership coordinator with WSDOT(360) 705-7505. Rosemary Nye is the regional head of NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Assoc.) (206)220-7653 and lives on Bainbridge!

Of course, just riding your bicycle safely is a great example: help the community get used to seeing and thinking about bicycles.

Wishing you safe riding!

When I go biking, I repeat a mantra of the day's sensations:  bright sun, blue sky, warm breeze, blue jay's call, ice melting and so on.  This helps me transcend the traffic, ignore the clamorings of work, leave all the mind theaters behind and focus on nature instead.  I still must abide by the rules of the road, of biking, of gravity.  But I am mentally far away from civilization.  The world is breaking someone else's heart.
