Please don't ride over the yellow lines when exiting the ferry!

squeaky wheels, Bainbridge Police, City of Bainbridge Public Works Department, the Washington State Patrol and the Washington Department of Transportation, along with the Bicycle Alliance of Washington, met in the summer of 2002 to discuss bicyclists' safety when exiting the ferries. This information can help you make better choices in your route from the ferry terminal.

Here's the problem
Most cyclists depart the ferry and head north on Olympic Drive to either ride west on Winslow Way, or proceed on SR 305. On weeknights, anywhere from 15-30 bicyclists are caught by departing motorcyclists and motor traffic also heading north on Olympic Drive. There are two 11-foot northbound lanes, meaning there is very limited space to accommodate this mix of traffic.

To avoid the difficult maneuver of crossing from the right lane to the left lane in heavy traffic, many bicyclists choose to ride far to the left, ACROSS THE CENTER LINE, towards oncoming traffic. Uh-oh.
This is illegal (R.C.W. 46.61.755) as well as dangerous and the Washington State Patrol will be issuing tickets. They will also increase enforcement of motorcyclists speeding or weaving dangerously through cyclists while exiting Olympic Drive.

  You have three choices:
	1. through the Police Department parking lot to Winslow Way
	2. left at Harborview and throught the Waterfront Park
	3. act like a car and just head bravely up Olympic Drive.
